A 57-year-old man has been found guilty of murdering his neighbour following an attack over what authorities described as a trivial matter.
Kurt Giwisser, aged 77, succumbed to injuries inflicted by David Hill in February 2023, according to West Yorkshire Police. The incident occurred at Mr Giwisser's home in Huddersfield.
During the trial at Leeds Crown Court on Thursday, Hill, of South Cross Road, was convicted of murder and is scheduled for sentencing on 18 December.
After the verdict, Mr Giwisser's family remembered him as "a gentle, caring man" whose presence was missed in every place he frequented.
The court heard that on 21 February, Hill went to Mr Giwisser's residence and attacked him immediately after he opened the door, punching him and forcing his way inside. Hill continued the assault before fleeing, leaving the elderly man injured on the floor.
Despite his injuries, Mr Giwisser managed to call emergency services and was taken to the hospital, where he received treatment before being discharged. Hill was arrested shortly after and initially released on bail as investigations proceeded.
In the weeks that followed, Mr Giwissers condition worsened, and despite ongoing medical care, he passed away in April. Medical experts later confirmed a direct link between Hill's attack and Mr Giwisser's death.
After three hours and 39 minutes of deliberation, the jury at Leeds Crown Court returned a verdict of guilty against Hill.
Detective Inspector Suzanne Hall remarked, "Kurt Giwisser was healthy and enjoying life until a violent neighbour took it away. It is unfathomable how anyone could show such aggression toward a man in his late 70s over such a minor matter."
Mr Giwisser, who loved playing guitar, was described by his family as "warmhearted and genuine" and someone who cherished simple routines like visiting his local coffee shop. His family highlighted the deep void his passing has left, especially among his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
"His death has caused lifelong grief and transformed our family gatherings. There is a silence where his laughter and music should be, and every happy moment is now tinged by his absence," the family said in a statement. "What happened did not only end his life but deeply affected all of us."
