Pope Leo XIV urged on Tuesday for open dialogue between the United States and Venezuela as tensions have increased between the two nations. Speaking in Spanish during a press briefing on a plane, the pontiff highlighted the uncertainty of the current situation. According to a translated transcript from Vatican News, he stated, The signals from the United States are changing, and we need to observe carefully. There appears to have been a phone conversation between the presidents, yet there remains a risk that military action, possibly including an invasion of Venezuelan territory, could occur.
The pope emphasized the value of diplomatic engagement over military measures, noting that while economic pressure may be applied, finding alternative paths to encourage change would be preferable if the United States decides to act.
According to White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt, President Trump and his national security team were scheduled to discuss the Venezuelan situation in the Oval Office on Monday. When asked about the potential deployment of troops, Leavitt confirmed that multiple strategic options remain under consideration.
Recent weeks have seen the United States strengthen its military presence near Venezuela. The Pentagon positioned the USS Gerald R. Ford and its carrier air wing in the Caribbean, while two B-1 Lancer bombers conducted flights off Venezuelas coast from Texass Dyess Air Force Base.
On Sunday, Trump acknowledged a phone conversation with Venezuelan President Nicols Maduro that occurred in November. Responding to questions, he simply confirmed, The answer is yes, regarding the call.
