Jos Pablo Lpez, president of Radiotelevisin Espaola (RTVE), has reaffirmed Spain's stance on next year's Eurovision Song Contest, following weeks of speculation about the event's future. Lpez confirmed that Spain will not participate in 2026 if Israel is allowed to compete.
Recently, Lpezs Austrian counterpart even visited Israel, which has become a controversial point for the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), defending the countrys participation despite accusations of genocide, forced displacements, the use of famine as a weapon, and unfulfilled post-war agreements according to experts.
Questions are being raised: Could Austria refuse to host the 2026 Eurovision if Israel is excluded? What changes are being made to Eurovisions voting rules amid claims of Israeli government influence?
Eurovision is widely recognized as a major tool of soft power in Europe, reaching millions worldwide. However, the competition maintains strict rules prohibiting political use. Lpez emphasized this as his secondary argument supporting RTVE's position, the primary one being human rights violations.
"Israel has used Eurovision politically, attempting to influence results without facing sanctions, which has occurred over at least the past two years," Lpez said. "Any other country misusing the contest in this way would have faced temporary suspension."
He referenced the performances of Eder Golan and Yuval Raphael in recent years, whose lyrics aligned with Benjamin Netanyahus government on the 7 October attacks and subsequent events. Additionally, one of the contests major sponsors, Moroccanoil, is Israeli-owned.
Lpez also addressed Eurovision director Martin Green: "He stated that TV stations and artists do not represent governments and that this is a cultural contest. But I ask: Does Mr Green imply that Russian or Belarusian broadcasters could return? Surely not, because if they did, they would exploit the contest politically just as Israel has."
An EBU general assembly is scheduled for 45 December to discuss the matter. As one of the five largest financial contributors, Spain holds significant influence over the competition.
The RTVE Board of Directors decided to withdraw from Eurovision after the United Nations confirmed through an ad hoc investigative committee that Netanyahus government had committed acts of genocide against the Gaza Strip population. Spain joined Iceland, Slovenia, Ireland, and the Netherlands in supporting a boycott of the event.
