Three teenagers have been formally charged in connection with the death of a 16-year-old boy who was chased and stabbed at a beach. Kayden Moy, from East Kilbride, succumbed to his injuries in hospital the day after a major incident at Irvine beach in North Ayrshire on 17 May.
The accused include Jay Stewart, 18, and two other youths aged 17 and 15, whose identities are legally protected. During a preliminary hearing at the High Court in Edinburgh, the trio faced charges of repeatedly stabbing Kayden and attempting to obstruct justice by fleeing the scene, concealing weapons, and instructing someone to destroy blood-stained clothing.
All three are also alleged to have displayed knives and a baton-like object at the beach while provoking others into fights. Prosecutors claim they endangered members of the public by throwing rocks at them. Jay Stewart is accused of possessing a knife and baton, while the 17-year-old and 15-year-old allegedly had knives.
The prosecution asserts that the teenagers caused Kayden's death by chasing him, forcing him to fall, and repeatedly stabbing him, with injuries that proved fatal. It is claimed that their actions were motivated by prior hostility towards him.
Additional charges state that the group tried to interfere with justice over the four days following the attack. They reportedly wiped a knife to remove blood, hid in bushes, fled the beach, traveled to East Kilbride while concealing their faces, and hid knives in household items such as a bed frame and freezer. They are further accused of requesting someone to burn blood-stained clothing. Jay Stewart allegedly committed these acts while on bail.
The case is set to proceed to trial at the High Court in Glasgow in May next year.
