Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murrays 2025 season ended abruptly after he was placed on injured reserve due to a foot injury. Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon confirmed that the injury is not progressing sufficiently for a return, effectively ending Murrays season. His future with the franchise in 2026 remains uncertain, making him a primary candidate for a quarterback reboot with a new team.
Murray has not addressed the media since his Week 5 injury but may have hinted at his exit from the Cardinals on social media. The team faces a challenging decision due to the financial implications of his contract, with dead cap charges reaching $57.75 million if released before June 1, or a split of $50.5 million in 2026 and $7.2 million in 2027 if designated post-June 1. A trade could reduce the cap impact to $17.9 million, though the team would likely receive minimal return due to his injury history and inconsistent performance.
Despite concerns over Murrays leadership and consistency, several executives note his athleticism and experience as a starter remain valuable, potentially warranting a mid-round draft pick in a trade.
Other Quarterbacks to Watch for Reboots
Mac Jones San Francisco 49ers
Jones has revitalized his career this season stepping in for an injured Brock Purdy. In eight starts, he posted a 5-3 record, completing nearly 70% of his passes for 2,151 yards, 13 touchdowns, and six interceptions. While his best fit may be in a West Coast or timing-based offense, teams like the Minnesota Vikings, Pittsburgh Steelers, and Miami Dolphins could explore him depending on their starter situations and coaching schemes. Jones could become a free agent in 2027 if he continues performing well as a backup.
Anthony Richardson Indianapolis Colts
At 23, Richardson possesses impressive physical tools but has struggled with injuries and consistency. Currently on injured reserve due to an orbital fracture, he remains under contract and could be traded depending on the Colts commitment to Mac Jones. His rookie contract allows a fifth-year option through 2027, but trade value is debated, ranging from a fourth- to fifth-round pick.
Will Levis Tennessee Titans
Levis, recovering from a significant AC joint surgery, is another potential reboot candidate. Having lost his starting role to Cam Ward, his trade value is currently low, possibly a late-round pick. Still, his athletic ability and flashes of talent make him a gamble for teams willing to invest in a quarterback with upside despite prior struggles and injuries.
Trey Lance Los Angeles Chargers
Lance has yet to receive a sustained starting opportunity despite his strong arm and mobility. At 25, he remains a potential high-upside option for teams looking for a quarterback who has had limited exposure and development time. He could attract interest if he performs well in limited opportunities before hitting free agency in 2026.
Kenny Pickett Las Vegas Raiders
Pickett has not been given a starting role this season despite Geno Smiths struggles. Evaluators acknowledge his ceiling is limited, but he could serve as a spot starter or backup in the right scheme. At 28, Picketts career trajectory resembles other long-term backup quarterbacks, offering potential as a reliable insurance option for teams in 2026.
