Margot Robbie has addressed the backlash surrounding the casting of herself and Jacob Elordi in Emerald Fennells upcoming adaptation of Wuthering Heights. The Oscar-nominated actress defended both her role as Catherine Earnshaw and Elordis portrayal of Heathcliff, urging audiences to see the film before forming opinions.
Fennells interpretation of Emily Bronts classic 1847 novel has faced scrutiny since casting announcements. While Catherine Earnshaw is originally depicted as a young brunette, Robbie, a 35-year-old blonde, takes on an older version of the character in her late 20s to early 30s. Robbie acknowledged the criticism in an interview with British Vogue, saying, I get it. Theres nothing else to go off at this point until people see the movie.
Elordis casting sparked further debate because Heathcliff is described in the novel as dark-skinned. Robbie, however, expressed confidence in his performance, stating, I saw him play Heathcliff. And he is Heathcliff. Id say, just wait. Trust me, youll be happy. She also praised Elordis talent, adding, Hes incredible and I believe in him so much. I honestly think hes our generations Daniel Day-Lewis.
Director Emerald Fennell also defended Robbies casting as Cathy, highlighting the characters complex nature. Cathy is a star. Shes willful, mean, a recreational sadist, a provocateur It was about finding someone who you would forgive in spite of yourself. Its difficult to find that supersized star power. Margot comes with big d*ck energy. Thats what Cathy needs, Fennell explained.
Some controversy has centered on the films marketing, including a provocative first-look image featuring Robbie. The actress reassured fans, emphasizing the movies emotional core. Everyones expecting this to be very, very raunchy. I think people will be surprised. Its more romantic than provocative Its that feeling when your chest swells or its like someones punched you in the guts, she said.
Wuthering Heights is set to premiere in theaters on February 13.
