The White House social media team recently faced backlash after using Sabrina Carpenter's "Juno" in a post promoting ICE's migrant arrests. Despite deleting the initial tweet, the administration quickly responded by posting an altered clip from Carpenter's recent "Saturday Night Live" commercial, overdubbing her voice to make it appear she was calling cast member Marcello Hernndez "illegal" instead of "hot."
In the original "SNL" commercial, Carpenter stood next to Hernndez and said, "I think I might need to arrest someone for being too hot." To which Hernndez humorously responded, "Oh well, I turn myself in," extending his hands as if to be cuffed. "You're under arrest!" Carpenter replied playfully.
However, the White House version of the video featured a re-recorded audio clip where Carpenter's voice now says, "...too illegal," as Hernndez puts his hands out. The caption for the altered TikTok and X videos reads: "PSA: If youre a criminal illegal, you WILL be arrested & deported."
The rest of the post, similar to the earlier deleted video, showcases immigrants being pursued and arrested. Carpenter's team did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the new video.
Previously, Carpenter expressed her anger over the White House's use of her music, calling the video "evil and disgusting," and urged that her work should not be used to promote "inhumane agendas." In the original video, the lyrics from "Juno," "Have you ever tried this one?" were paired with footage of migrants being apprehended. It remains unclear whether the White House deleted the post voluntarily, as a version on TikTok still exists, albeit with the contentious audio removed.
The administration had mocked Carpenter's objection by quoting her lyrics in a dismissive statement. White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson responded to the backlash by saying, "Heres a Short n Sweet message for Sabrina Carpenter: we wont apologize for deporting dangerous criminal illegal murderers, rapists, and pedophiles from our country. Anyone who would defend these sick monsters must be stupid, or is it slow?"
The White House has used similar tactics in the past, including a November 3 post featuring Taylor Swift's "The Fate of Ophelia" as the backdrop for a pro-Trump video. That video remains online, further fueling tensions with celebrities and their supporters.
As the controversy continues, its evident that the White Houses social media team enjoys making bold statements by twisting celebrity messages to suit their pro-ICE and pro-Trump agenda.
