Can the Buccaneers' 'X Factor' lead to a playoff comeback?

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers rediscovered their rhythm in a hard-fought 2017 victory over the Arizona Cardinals, and the storyline was made even stronger by the long-awaited return of running back Bucky Irving.

After missing almost two months, Irving stepped back onto the field and made an immediate impact. He carried the ball 17 times for 61 yards and scored a touchdown, providing the energy and consistency Tampa Bay needed to secure the win.

Now sitting at a 75 record and still holding first place in the NFC South, the Buccaneers are entering a crucial stretch. With five games remaining, Irvings role could prove decisive. ESPN analyst Jenna Laine identified him as Tampa Bays potential X factor for the remainder of the season.

According to NFL Next Gen Stats, Irving has forced missed tackles on 35.2% of his rushing attempts since entering the league last year the best mark among all running backs with at least 250 carries during that period. With quarterback Baker Mayfield dealing with a shoulder issue on his non-throwing arm and receiver Chris Godwin Jr. only recently returning to full health, the offense has leaned heavily on Irvings ability to move the chains.

While his 61-yard performance may not reflect his usual standards, it was his first game back after a long absence. As he continues to regain rhythm and conditioning, his production is expected to increase each week.

The return of key offensive weapons could not have come at a better time. Alongside a healthy Irving and a recovering Godwin, head coach Todd Bowles also hinted that Mike Evans may soon return to practice. With their core players trending toward full strength, Tampa Bays offense is beginning to look dangerous once again.

If the Buccaneers are able to maintain their position atop the NFC South and lock in a playoff berth, Bucky Irvings presence might be one of the main reasons they get there.
