When discussing the greatest scorers in NBA history, Michael Jordan is often at the forefront. Standing 6'6" and possessing extraordinary athleticism, a relentless drive, and a competitive edge, Jordan was nearly unstoppable whenever he attacked the basket.
Today, the league features many prolific scorers. From emerging stars like Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Anthony Edwards, and Luka Doncic, to veterans such as Kevin Durant and Steph Curry, modern players showcase a wide array of scoring techniques, commonly referred to as a players bag.
Paul Pierce, a former scoring talent himself, sparked debate when he described Jordans offensive arsenal as limited. In basketball terminology, a bag refers to the full set of moves, counters, and maneuvers a player can employ to score.
One or two dribble pull-ups, bro, Pierce stated on the No Fouls Given podcast. Mike had a limited bag.
However, Pierce clarified that Jordans dominance minimized the need for complicated moves. With a strong foundation and upper body, Jordan could overpower defenders with direct drives to the hoop or effective post-up moves.
He didnt need all the fancy stuff. He went straight to business, Pierce added.
Former NBA champion Danny Green agreed, noting that while Jordan had a set of offensive tools, his physicality and skill made them almost unnecessary. You couldnt stop him from getting to a spot. And hes athletic, Green commented.
Jordans statistics reflect his efficiency and scoring prowess. Across 15 seasons, he earned 10 scoring titles, five MVP awards, and six Finals MVP honors. Excluding his time with the Washington Wizards, he averaged 31.5 points per game on 50.5% shooting.
Currently, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is one of the leagues most prolific scorers. The 6'6" guard has tallied at least 20 points in 93 consecutive games, trailing only Wilt Chamberlain in that streak. Averaging 32.5 points with 54.5% shooting overall and 41.1% from three, Gilgeous-Alexander is establishing himself as an elite scorer.
Pierce even compared Shai to Jordan, saying, You cant stop him. Hes starting to give me that Jordan presence.
However, former All-Star Gilbert Arenas defended Jordan, praising the elegance of his straightforward game. His bag was from the 1980s. How elaborate did you expect it to be? One or two dribble moves and a fadethat was it, Arenas said.
What Jordan may have lacked in flashy techniques, he compensated for with superior footwork, precision, and efficiency. Ultimately, his ability to reach scoring positions and convert shots defined his greatness, proving that style points are secondary to effectiveness.
