DHS initiates immigration campaign in New Orleans

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has launched a new immigration initiative in New Orleans, according to a press release issued Wednesday. The operation, called Operation Catahoula Crunch, is focused on apprehending criminal undocumented immigrants who are reportedly free due to sanctuary city policies.

Sanctuary policies put American communities at risk by allowing criminal illegal aliens to remain free, forcing DHS officers to confront dangerous situations to remove individuals who should not have been released, said DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin.

The operations title is a nod to Louisianas state dog, the Catahoula Leopard Dog. This effort is part of a broader immigration crackdown under the Trump administration, which has drawn criticism from progressive groups. Since the summer, cities including Los Angeles, Chicago, Washington, D.C., and Charlotte, N.C., have been targeted.

According to DHS, the operation focuses on individuals involved in serious crimes such as home invasion, armed robbery, grand theft auto, and sexual assault. McLaughlin stated, Under the leadership of President Trump and Secretary Noem, we are restoring safety and order for American citizens.

Earlier, President Trump suggested federalizing law enforcement in New Orleans. We will step into New Orleans and make it a much safer city. There are current issues with violent crime, and we are committed to addressing them, he said on September 5.

New Orleans has a Democratic mayor, but the state government, led by Republican Governor Jeff Landry, has supported measures against undocumented immigrants. Governor Landry has collaborated with the federal government on initiatives like Operation GEAUX to target illegal immigration.
