Millions may be allocated for bus shelter repairs

Wiltshire is preparing to invest millions of pounds in upgrading and replacing its bus shelters. Out of around 4,000 bus stops across the county, approximately 700-800 are fitted with shelters owned by Wiltshire Council.

A recent assessment revealed that more than half of these shelters require some form of maintenance or repair. In response, the council is set to issue a tender for a contract valued between 6 million and 8 million. The work is scheduled to begin in February and continue over a five-year period.

The funding for this initiative will come from current and forthcoming government grants. Councillor Martin Smith, cabinet member for highways, emphasized that the project is a key step in enhancing the county's public transport infrastructure. He highlighted the importance of providing high-quality shelters that serve local communities and support increased use of public transport.

"Many of our bus shelters are in need of repair or replacement. This project will allow us to deliver accessible, well-maintained facilities that encourage more people to use buses," Councillor Smith stated.
