Euphoria creator hints at new storylines for season three of the show

Sam Levinson has shared exciting details about the upcoming third season of the critically acclaimed drama Euphoria, which is set to premiere in April next year after a hiatus of over four years. The HBO series, which has captivated audiences with its portrayal of young adults navigating complex issues such as addiction, crime, and betrayal, features a stellar cast including Zendaya, Sydney Sweeney, Jacob Elordi, and Hunter Schafer. The new season will also see the addition of singer Rosala and media figure Trisha Paytas, who will join the ensemble as the characters transition into adult life.

Levinson recently provided a glimpse into the new season at a special event in London. He explained that the time jump to five years later felt natural, saying, "It felt like the right moment because if they had gone to college, theyd be out of it by now." The new narrative will explore the characters' first steps into adulthood, with Rue (Zendaya) facing significant challenges south of the U.S. border in Mexico, attempting to repay a dangerous debt to Laurie (Martha Kelly) through creative means.

Levinson also shared updates on Cassie (Sydney Sweeney) and Nate (Jacob Elordi). "Cassie is now living in the suburbs with Nate, they're engaged, and she's struggling with an addiction to social media, constantly comparing herself to her high school peers who seem to be living extravagant lives," he said. The creator also teased that their wedding will be a memorable event for viewers.

Hunter Schafer's character Jules will be pursuing her dreams of becoming a painter at an art school, while Alexa Demie's Maddy will be working in Hollywood at a talent agency. Meanwhile, Maude Apatows Lexi has a new role as an assistant to a showrunner, played by Sharon Stone. Levinson expressed his confidence, stating, "I feel strongly that this is our best season yet."

However, not all fan-favorite characters will return for the third season. Austin Abrams, Algee Smith, and Storm Reid will not be part of the new season, and Barbie Ferreira, who portrayed Kat, left the series after season two. The passing of Angus Cloud, who played Fezco, in July 2023 at the age of 25, has also deeply affected the shows production. The show's third season, which was initially scheduled to begin filming in December 2023, was delayed due to Clouds death and the ongoing Hollywood strikes.

Colman Domingo, who plays Ali, spoke about the impact of Clouds loss on the storyline. He shared in a 2024 interview, "Fezco was meant to play a significant role in season three. His absence has definitely influenced the direction of the series. We've all come together as a cast to grieve and remember him, sharing both sorrow and moments of joy in his honor."

Euphoria remains one of HBO's most popular series, ranking as its fourth most-watched show, behind only Game of Thrones, The Last of Us, and House of the Dragon. Zendaya has garnered two Emmys and a Golden Globe for her iconic portrayal of Rue, while Colman Domingo won a guest actor Emmy for his role as Ali.
