Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol reveal bronze statue in London's Leicester Square to celebrate 'DDLJ' 30th anniversary (EXCLUSIVE)

Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol recently visited London to unveil a bronze statue in honor of their legendary roles in "Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge" (DDLJ), marking the 30th anniversary of the film's global success. The statue, featuring the iconic poses of Raj and Simran, was unveiled on Thursday at Leicester Square, officially recognizing DDLJ as the first Indian film to receive such an honor on the prestigious "Scenes in the Square" trail. The trail features statues of famous characters from other beloved films, such as "Harry Potter," "Mary Poppins," "Paddington," and "Singin' in the Rain."

The unveiling ceremony was attended by Yash Raj Films CEO Akshaye Widhani and Heart of London Business Alliance CEO Ros Morgan, who both expressed their pride in this monumental moment. Khan shared his thoughts on the films lasting impact: DDLJ was created with a pure heart. We aimed to tell a love story that transcends boundaries, and I believe this is why it continues to resonate after 30 years. Personally, DDLJ is part of who I am, and its humbling to see the film and Kajol and me still receiving so much love.

Kajol reflected on the continued adoration for the film: Its unbelievable to witness how DDLJ still touches hearts even three decades later. Watching the statue reveal in London felt like reliving a part of our history a story that has truly transcended generations.

Leicester Square holds special meaning for the film, as it is featured in one of the movie's key scenes, where Raj and Simran unknowingly cross paths before embarking on their journey across Europe. In the scene, Raj is seen outside the Vue cinema, while Simran walks past the Odeon Leicester Square.

The 1995 romantic drama by Aditya Chopra follows two non-resident Indians who fall in love during a European and Indian adventure, beginning at Kings Cross station. Upon its release, the film became a cultural sensation and holds the record for the longest theatrical run in Hindi cinema, still playing in Indian theaters to this day.

Akshaye Widhani, CEO of Yash Raj Films, expressed immense pride in this moment: As an Indian studio with over 50 years of legacy in sharing heartwarming stories with the world, this recognition of DDLJ in the UK is a proud achievement for us. Having the first Indian film immortalized in statue form in Leicester Square is a remarkable and humbling moment for the company.

DDLJs influence has extended beyond the screen, with a stage adaptation titled "Come Fall In Love The DDLJ Musical" being performed in Manchester earlier this year. The statue is the 11th character installation on the "Scenes in the Square" trail, a project supported by Heart of London Business Alliance and Westminster City Council.
