During a segment on the TODAY show on Tuesday, Jamie Lee Curtis experienced a touching moment that went beyond the promotion of her new Disney comedy, Ella McCay. The actor, known for her role in Freaky Friday, came to discuss the film but was drawn into an unexpected emotional exchange when she noticed something special on host Craig Melvin.
Whats the blue dot in your ear? Tell me the story, Curtis asked. Melvin shared, Years ago, my daughter was hesitant to get her ears pierced. In a spur-of-the-moment decision, I said, If I do it, will you? She agreed. Thats how it happened. Curtis responded warmly, Thats beautiful.
The conversation eventually shifted to Ella McCay, which follows a young woman, played by Emma Mackey, as she navigates family chaos and an unexpected political journey. Curtis plays the characters aunt, Helen. Reflecting on the story, Curtis commented, What Ella McCay is going through mirrors what many of us experience. We all suppress feelings of frustration and outrage.
The interview took an even more emotional turn when Melvin showed Curtis a video message from fitness icon Susan Powter. Curtis had worked with Powter as the executive producer of the documentary Stop the Insanity: Finding Susan Powter. In the video, Powter said, My hand in yours, and Im grateful it is, before expressing thanks to Curtis for her dedication to countless people. Curtis became visibly moved, tears forming as she listened.
Its why were here, Curtis said, her voice catching. Its why you love what you do. Its why you encouraged your daughter to take that step, and you did it together. She also praised Melvin for keeping the earring as a symbol of that connection and thanked the shows producers for allowing that personal story to be shared. Im glad you could say, This is important to me. This is my daughter, my connection to my daughter, Curtis concluded.
