Patrice Williams initially believed the loud pops she heard during her daughters second birthday party were balloons bursting. Instead, those noises were gunshots that tragically claimed the lives of four attendees.
The shooting occurred in Stockton, California, over the weekend, killing three children aged 8, 9, and 14, along with a 21-year-old adult. Authorities reported that 11 others sustained injuries, one critically, during the gathering of roughly 100 guests.
Ms. Williams shared that her other daughter, a cousin, and three friends were among the victims struck while partygoers were around the birthday cake. The attack happened just as others were preparing to sit for dinner, with the assailant or assailants wielding an automatic weapon. Officials suspect the shooting may have been targeted rather than random.
The violence began inside the event hall before spilling onto the street, though it remains unclear whether any return fire occurred. Ms. Williams, who did not see the attackers, expressed shock and disbelief at the brutality.
Later that evening, emergency vehicles with sirens filled the foggy streets as police searched for those responsible. The colorful venue, once decorated with balloons and a swan-shaped bounce house, has been sealed off for investigation by local and federal authorities, including the San Joaquin Sheriff's Department and the FBI.
Stockton, located about 80 miles east of San Francisco, has been experiencing rising violent crime rates. Sheriff Patrick Withrow emphasized that the shooting was likely not random and may have involved multiple perpetrators who remain at large. Despite the citys fear, authorities stated there is no ongoing threat to residents.
Officials are urging the public to provide information, video evidence, and tips, offering a growing reward for leads. Stockton Mayor Christina Fugazi vowed that those responsible will face justice. While gang-related motives are suspected, law enforcement has not confirmed this, calling on the community to assist with any information.
Governor Gavin Newsom ordered state flags at half-staff to honor the deceased children and show solidarity with the grieving community.
Among the victims, eight-year-old Maya Lupian was remembered by her sister as a vibrant and talented child with a love for karate, dance, and art. Fourteen-year-old Amari Peterson, a sports enthusiast with college aspirations, was described as bright and promising by his family. A 21-year-old victim, Susano Archuleta, was remembered by his brother as energetic and full of life.
Families returned to the scene the following day to collect belongings, still in shock and fearful for their safety. The event space, previously used as a childrens theatre and recording studio, is unlikely to reopen, serving instead as a memorial to those lost.
