Shop raided, thousands of illegal cigarettes confiscated

Authorities in Herefordshire have confiscated hundreds of packets of unlicensed cigarettes and tobacco, along with over 17,000 in cash, from a retail outlet. The seizure took place at Rayan Mini Market on Drapers Lane, Leominster, after concerns arose regarding the sale of illegal products.

The operation involved Griff, a specialized tobacco detection dog, which helped officers locate 157 pouches of illicit hand-rolling tobacco and 406 cigarette packs stored in a vehicle behind the store.

The evaded duty on these items has been estimated at 9,704.78. In addition, a total of 17,350 in cash was discovered hidden inside a fridge on the premises.

An interim closure order has been issued for the shop while a hearing at Hereford Magistrates' Court is scheduled to determine a longer-term closure.

Sgt Duncan Reynolds stated, "We remain committed to identifying outlets selling counterfeit tobacco and illegal vaping products, taking action to protect our communities. The trade in unlicensed goods threatens legitimate businesses and is often linked to organised crime and exploitation."
